Are you a highly motivated professional biologist who can provide expert advice and develop initiatives to manage aquaculture using ecosystems—and area-based approaches? Are you capable of utilizing and synthesizing current scientific information to enhance aquaculture management?

Join the Aquaculture Development Branch and play a critical role in ensuring aquaculture is managed for sustainability.

You will be responsible for the development and initiation of ecosystem– and area-based approaches to management of the aquaculture industry. You will provide technical expertise to the ministry and the provincial government on ecosystems effects of aquaculture and approaches to their management, including development of predictive models to simulate cumulative, near-field and far-field effects of finfish and shellfish aquaculture, as well as the effects of other human activities on and in conjunction with the aquaculture sector.

You will take a leadership role in ensuring integration of ecosystem- and area-based objectives in making licensing decisions, as well as evaluating and integrating First Nations Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in the decision-making process.

You have a post-graduate degree in a relevant field such as: Biology, Zoology, Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or Ecology, plus 1 year experience in a government-related position and 2 years’ experience working with the aquaculture sector in either an industry or research capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with:

• Experience in program development and implementation, including development of program-related performance measures and standards;
• Experience in biological modeling of, and applying ecosystems- and area-based management approaches to, complex ecological systems;
• Experience building, negotiating and maintaining effective relationships with government agencies, industry representatives, community leaders and First Nations;
• An ability to organize, prioritize and manage a diverse range of tasks with competing priorities and meet anticipated timelines without recourse to supervision; and,
• Strong leadership competencies such as strategic orientation, innovation, teamwork, relationship building and problem solving.

Qualified applicants may be placed in a cross-government inventory for future consideration in similar positions in both union and non-union environments. You must be willing to work overtime and under adverse conditions, and travel is required.
